From the air it appears as a great flat greennes threaded with myriad streams and of silver. Thrusting through it all, two huge brown river arms impart a muscular and primeval feel to the landscape. When you down to earth the scene appears scarcely less timeless.
Thick walls of nipa palms line the banks of streams and creeks where fishermen paddle their small boats in the early morning. Villages are separated more effectively by dense tropical vegetation than by distance. Only at the junctions of main canals – traditional venues for colourful floating markets.
